Lewisohn, Ludwig
(1883-1955)
   American author and translator. Born in Berlin, he was taken to Charleston, South Carolina, in 1890. He was professor of German at Ohio State University (1911-19), and from 1948 professor of compar-ative literature at Brandeis University. Between 1924 and 1940 he lived in Paris. His writings include novels on Jewish subjects: The Island Within and The Last Days of Shylock. He also wrote books dealing with Judaism and Zionism, including Israel, Theodor Herzl: A Portrait for this Age, The American Jew: Character and Destiny and What Is the Jewish Heritage?
